Our favorite place to cook for people is in the field, but there’s only so much you can do with a camp stove. So, we have started a project to cook in two indoor kitchens – one in south Seattle and one in the north – from which we can provide meals to camps nearby. We invite you to join us!
South Kitchen – Hillman City Collaboratory
We are cooking on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 5:30 at the Hillman City Collaboratory, 5623 Rainier Ave. S, at S. Orcas St. (map). At present (June 2017), we cook and deliver food for about 100 people in two camps: Camp Second Chance, and Nickelsville Georgetown. We’re just learning how to cook in such quantity. We hope to expand our capacity as time goes on.
You are welcome to join us! You will likely end up peeling and chopping vegetables, mixing sauces in bowls, and maybe managing the two convection ovens which are our primary equipment in this kitchen. In any case, you will be part of a devoted team providing hearty food to our homeless neighbors.
North Kitchen – Secret location, TBA.
We’re pretty sure this place in Greenwood is going to get on board, but there are some meetings yet that must take place. This kitchen will cook for camps in the north, including Camp United We Stand, and Licton Springs Village. We’ll let you know when we’re ready to go in the north!
