Housing is a human right; ALL people deserve a safe place to live. Some people face more barriers to housing than others. Unhoused people of color face more barriers than white people. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people face more barriers than straight people. The truth is, queer and trans people of color (QTPOC) who are ALSO poor and unhoused face a miserable and terrifying laundry list of intersecting barriers, all founded in ignorance and hate. At the same time, queer and trans people of color are most in danger of being violently assaulted on the streets. We need to get them all inside as quickly as possible.

Our QTPOC Housing Fund is a special program for people of color who are LGBTQ or gender nonconforming. We raise money to help them get into housing, and volunteer advocates partner with them to help them through the rehousing process. If you have been denied housing because of racism or homophobia, that can be an overwhelmingly depressing experience that makes it hard to continue the search. People who are put in this position need allies and companions who can bear witness to their struggle, help them navigate the system, and offer friendship and support when things are going badly, and offer congratulations and celebration when things are going well. The journey from homelessness to safe and stable housing can be a long and frightening one, and we all need community and companionship on the way.
